Angels for Shannon

Angels for Shannon (AFS) - A Nonprofit Organization

Angels for Shannon (AFS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting and supporting individuals facing the dual challenges of cancer and financial hardship. My own story began in 2006 when I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, which later progressed to stage 4 in 2010. Faced with such a serious diagnosis, my friends and I came together to create the Angels for Shannon website, a source of hope that enabled us to raise funds for alternative cancer treatment when conventional options seemed out of reach.

Choosing alternative treatments wasn't just a decision; it was a necessity because my health insurance didn’t cover all the possibilities we wanted to explore. Along this path, I found a community of fighters, each facing their own battles with courage and grace. Even before my own recovery was complete, I realized my mission had expanded—to share resources, offer support, and walk alongside others confronting similar challenges.

To everyone who has supported their loved ones in their fight against cancer, I want to express how deeply grateful I am for your love, compassion, and empathy. You are the true angels in this world, providing light during the darkest times.

I completely understand the emotional toll that comes with fighting for your life while also dealing with the weight of financial strain. My journey was frightening, and I often felt like I was racing against time. Some days, I found myself constantly checking to see if anyone had donated, and it was disheartening when nothing came through, especially when my life depended on it.

But through it all, my spirit remained strong. Just when time seemed to be running out, a miracle happened—I found CMN Hospital.

In just five months, thanks to the generous support of incredible friends and kind-hearted souls, we raised the funds necessary to continue fighting for my life. I am forever touched by the countless unseen heroes who contributed to my fundraiser. Your compassion created a tapestry of hope and gratitude that I will carry with me always.

While I may not have funds to offer, I am always here to provide resources, ideas, and a listening ear. I also offer guidance on creating and managing fundraising campaigns, drawing from my own experiences to help others navigate this challenging process. Please reach out for support, and let’s stay connected in every way possible.

Exploring Funding Options

Exploring Funding Options

When faced with the financial burden of medical treatments, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed. While fundraising can provide significant support, there are also other funding options you might consider. These options are personal decisions and should be carefully weighed based on your unique circumstances. Here are a few avenues you may want to explore:

  • Crowdfunding Platforms: Websites like GoFundMe, YouCaring, or GiveSendGo allow individuals to create campaigns and receive donations from friends, family, and even strangers.
  • Personal Loans: Some people find that taking out a personal loan helps bridge the gap in funding their treatment.
  • Investments and Savings: Utilizing personal savings or investments can be a way to cover expenses, though it’s important to consider the impact on your financial future.
  • Charitable Organizations and Community Funds: Some local charities, community groups, and fraternal organizations offer financial assistance to those in need.
  • Employer Assistance Programs: Some employers offer financial assistance programs or emergency funds for employees facing serious health challenges.
  • Digital Assets (Bitcoin, Cryptocurrency): If you have digital assets, they could potentially be used to support your treatment costs.
  • Retirement, Government, or Pension Income: These sources of income might be available to you, depending on your age and financial situation.
  • IRA: Accessing funds from an IRA is another option, though it’s important to understand the potential penalties and tax implications.
  • Life Insurance Policy: Cashing out part of a life insurance policy can provide immediate funds, though it’s crucial to fully understand the long-term effects.
  • Church or Community Support: Some find support through their church or local community, whether through donations or other forms of assistance.
  • Pensions and Other Retirement Accounts: These can be a valuable resource if you’re eligible to access them.
  • Rental or Investment Income: If you have property or investments that generate income, these can be a steady source of funding.
  • Sell Property or Other Assets: Selling assets, whether it’s property or other valuables, is another way to raise necessary funds.
  • Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC): A HELOC allows you to borrow against the equity in your home, offering flexibility in repayment.
  • Mortgage Loan or Reverse Mortgage: These are options to consider if you own your home, though it’s important to carefully weigh the implications.
  • 401K (with potential fees): Some people access their 401K funds for medical expenses, though this comes with potential fees and tax considerations.

Each of these options comes with its own set of considerations, and it’s important to consult with a financial advisor or trusted professional to determine what’s best for you. Making informed decisions with guidance can help you navigate these challenging times with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Compassion and Support Through Fundraising Challenges

I want to share some heartfelt thoughts with you because I know how tough it can be to raise money for your cancer treatment. This path is filled with uncertainty and emotional strain, and it's okay to feel overwhelmed. I had to raise money for my own treatment after being told I had only months to live. The urgency and pressure were incredibly hard to bear, but I want you to know you don't have to face this alone. Finding comfort in the love and support of those around you is essential right now. Even one caring friend or family member can turn moments of doubt into hope.

I understand the doubts that can arise, making you wonder if anyone truly understands your struggle. It's natural to feel isolated, but reaching out for help is a sign of your strength and the importance of your cause. It shows the incredible impact your efforts can have, not just for you, but for others who see your courage. During those anxious moments of waiting for responses, try to lean on your inner strength and trust in the process. Your determination and resilience are powerful tools that will guide you through this difficult time.

It’s okay to feel scared and uncertain, especially when facing such significant challenges. Your fundraiser is not just about raising money—it's about showing others the real need for support. Every dollar brings you closer to the care you need and the hope for better days.

Hold onto your faith and stay hopeful. Remember, you are supported, loved, and cared for by many, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Together, we can face these challenges with courage and compassion.

Please know that I am here for you. If you need ideas, emotional support, or just someone to talk to, reach out. You don't have to go through this alone, and I'm here to help in any way I can.

Hey You - By Heather Rayburn

"Hey You" By Heather Rayburn

During my battle with breast cancer, my closest friend, Heather Rayburn, showed incredible empathy and respect. With a heart as big as hers, she has always gone above and beyond for others.

I asked her to compose a song for fellow survivors. Drawing upon my experiences with cancer and domestic violence, as well as the challenges she has encountered in her own life, Heather beautifully captured the adversity we face. Her heartfelt and compassionate nature truly shines through in the result—an extraordinary song titled "Hey You." It stands as a testament to resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. I invite you to watch the captivating video and share in the powerful message it conveys.
