Journey of the Heart
Journey of the Heart Coaching: Finding Strength in Faith
In my younger years, I didn’t always recognize the quiet ways God tried to guide me through life’s difficult moments. But life eventually brought me to my knees—a painful divorce, the struggle to support my family as a single mom, a broken heart, and the trauma of sexual assault, followed by two years of being stalked. It was in these dark times that I began to pour my heart into prayer. Still, amid my fear, anxiety, and impatience, I found myself wondering: Would God answer me? Would He mend my broken life, like a little girl’s shattered porcelain doll?
The Cancer Diagnosis That Shattered My World
Back in 2006, when I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, I begged God to take it away. “Not me! This can’t be happening!” I cried. Life can feel so fragile, and breast cancer was an unimaginable nightmare. But I soon realized that while we can’t always control the storms in our lives, we can choose how we face them.
In 2010, cancer returned—this time, stage 4 breast cancer. It had spread to my bones and lungs. The doctors told me I had only months to live. Fear washed over me, and I stood at a critical crossroads—one path led to fear and surrender, the other to courage and a deeper understanding of what God was calling me to.
My Plea to God on the Beach
As the sun set over the horizon, painting the beach in golden hues, I sat in the sand and pleaded with God. "Please, spare me for a bit longer," I prayed, knowing UCLA had given me only months to live. I wasn’t ready to leave. There was still so much more I needed to do. In that moment, I promised God that if He would give me more time, I would spend the rest of my life helping others who were battling cancer.
Breast cancer survivors need someone who understands the fear, uncertainty, and faith that are intertwined in this battle. That’s where I come in—committed to guiding women who are facing this terrifying diagnosis. I am Shannon Knight, and I know what it feels like to pray for more time and to fight through every moment with hope.
Awakening to a New Purpose
In that critical moment, I stood at a crossroads, faced with the choice of letting fear control me or trusting that God had a plan. This wasn’t just about fighting to survive—it was about living with meaning, no matter how long or short my time might be. I chose to trust Him.
As I reflected, I saw how much of my life had been spent trying to steer my own course. I was so focused on being the best mother, friend, and professional that I had lost sight of the most important part—my relationship with God. My soul had been waiting for me to surrender to Him, and when I finally did, peace washed over me.
Trusting God's Plan Over My Own
Sometimes, it takes a crisis like cancer to make us aware of the ways we’ve resisted God’s nudges. I learned that trying to control my life only distanced me from the path God intended. The crossroads I faced wasn’t just about surviving, but about choosing how to live the rest of my life. Whether I had months or years, I wanted my time to be spent with purpose.
I chose to trust God fully, and that decision changed everything. Now, I live each day with gratitude for the time I’ve been given and a renewed commitment to helping others. I know many of you are praying for survival, just as I was. Please know, I’ve been there too, on my knees, asking God for just a little more time. I can’t promise the outcome, but I can promise that you’re not alone. Keep trusting that He is walking with you through it all.
Embracing Life with a New Purpose
Since that September evening in 2010, my life has never been the same. The doctors’ prognosis wasn’t accurate, and I’m still here. Every day, I offer thanks to God for His grace. This journey strengthened my faith. I’ve learned to surrender not just my problems but my heart to Him. When I ask God for help, I’m not asking Him to fix my circumstances, but to fix me—to help me see clearly and be the person He created me to be.
