Beauty in the Brokenness

– by Shannon Knight

Exhausted, she sank onto the edge of her bed. She finally unpacked the last box from her move. Gently rubbing her sore shoulders, she thought about the thousand miles that separated her from everything she knew.

She gently unwrapped her antique compact mirror—a cherished family heirloom she had carried through every season of her life. Her heart sank when she opened it. The glass had shattered, her reflection staring at her now fragmented in the jagged pieces of glass. “Is this my life?” she whispered.

Disheartened, she gently set the mirror down on her bed. Her trembling hands covered her face, and the tears finally broke free. She cried for the brokenness of her life that felt as if it had shattered beyond repair. When her tears slowed, she opened her eyes, and her breath caught. Colors—vivid and alive—danced across her bedroom walls like soft whispers of hope. Sunlight streaming through the window had found its way to the shattered mirror.

She slowly lifted her hands, mesmerized as the colors flickered and shifted, moving across her fingers like they had a life of their own. The light transformed, shifting with every tiny movement, painting her hands with vibrant hues. It was as if her broken mirror had been waiting for the light all along. She felt her heart stirring with hope as she realized something for the first time: Surrender your broken pieces… The harder she had held on to her pain, the more it had hurt her—cutting only deeper, leaving more scars. The moment she had set down her broken mirror, the light had transformed it into something beautiful.

She thought of her Creator, the One who knew what to do with the shattered pieces of her life. She realized she had to surrender the broken pieces of her heart. In that moment, she knew the truth: the cracks in her life were places where God’s light would shine through. They weren’t the end—they were the beginning.
She whispered, “Take it, Lord, I surrender it to You, It’s Yours.” Amen.

“Every broken piece of your life is where beauty waits to be revealed. The cracks you see are where God’s light can shine through. Surrender the shattered parts of your life to your Father, who lovingly transforms them into His masterpiece.”

Think On These Things

Have you ever stood in awe of a stained glass window, the light streaming through its vibrant colors? Each piece of broken glass, carefully chosen and placed, comes together to tell a breathtaking story. The artist already sees the masterpiece before breaking the first piece of glass.

When you look at the masterpiece, do you think about all the broken pieces and what it took to create it? Doesn’t that make it even more awe-inspiring? God is your Father and Creator. What feels shattered and beyond repair is not beyond His hands. He lovingly takes every fragment—the pain, regret, and fear—and transforms it into something extraordinary.

Do you know someone with a broken past who inspires you? Their life reflects healing and hope, a reminder of God’s grace shining through. Are there broken pieces you’ve held onto for too long?
God isn’t asking you to fix them. He’s inviting you to surrender them. Healing takes time, but His love brings beauty and light to every crack.

"We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand."

—Isaiah 64:8

Pray

Jesus,
I feel so shattered, and I don’t even know where to begin restoring all that is broken. I surrender it all to You—my fears, my doubts, my pain—because I know You are the One who creates clarity from chaos, restores faith from fear, and redeems all that is broken when I trust You with it. Thank You for holding me close, as I let go and trust You completely, and for reminding me that I am never alone. I am loved, and I am Yours.
Amen
